Implants ...
The first stage
of fitting dental implants will involve a surgical operation, normally
carried out under either local or general anaesthetic at the dental
department of the hospital. This involves the fitting of anchor points
into the jaw bone, after which the gum is stitched back in place over
the newly-fitted fixtures, to protect the site whilst bone forms around
the implant to anchor it in place.
The second stage
involves cutting the gum over the implant to allow the implant to
protrude. The gum can then heal in place up to the implant as if it were
a tooth.
The third stage
involves the fitting of the dental prosthesis over the implant and if it
is removable, demonstrating to the patient how to remove and refit it
after cleaning.
Dental hygiene
is very important once implants are fitted and special attention must be
paid to it.

Posts are implanted into the jaw bone,
where they are left to allow the bone to grow round them and fix
them into permanent position. The prosthesis is fitted over the
implanted posts. |
