There are 29,055 dentists registered in the UK (at January 1998). There
are around 20,000 NHS dentists in general practice and approximately
500-1,000 purely private dentists.
Dentists also work
in hospitals, in community clinics, the armed forces and in industry.
The majority
of dental patients are seen on the NHS, with over 29 million adults and
children registered with NHS general dental practitioners. This
represents 50% of adults and 60% of children.
One-third
of registered NHS patients are entitled to free dental treatment, but
many more patients see their dentist privately.
About one million people have private dental plans.
Nine out of ten patients
are happy with the care and treatment they receive from their dentist.
Over eight in ten people
believe their dentist is kind, attentive,
unhurried and spends an adequate amount of time with them.
Seven out of ten people
have no problems whatsoever with going to the dentist.
85% of people
believe they look after their teeth well.
Two-thirds of people
clean their teeth twice a day.
Nearly one-third of UK adults
have 12 or more fillings, but amongst 16-24 year olds it is only one in
ten.
Over 1,600 people
die of oral cancer each year, which in many cases
can be spotted during a routine dental examination.
